Alyse Nelson Bloom, President of Vital Voices, and Shireen Zaman, Senior Program Officer, discuss the Vital Voices- MEPI project in Jordan with our local partner, Samar Haj Hassan of Mahara Consultancies in Development. Vital Voices has been working with Samar and her team in Jordan for almost two years on a project to promote public-private partners to address family violence.

About Samar Haj Hassan
Samar Haj Hassan is the co-founder and managing partner of Mahara, Professional Consultancies in Development, the first consultancy firm in Jordan that provides comprehensive services in the development field. Ms. Haj Hassan has been exposed to national and international development experiences through her work at the Jordan River Foundation as a Manager of the Child Safety Program and at the National Council for Family Affairs as a Deputy Secretary General, at which she is a current board member. Her broad experiences have provided her with the knowledge and expertise to understand social and human development from the levels of implementation and policy development. Ms. Haj Hassan has participated in several national committees including the national committee for the development of the Youth Strategy, the Social Network Committee of the National Agenda for Jordan, the National Committee for the development of the National Strategy for the Jordanian Family and the Management Team of the National Project for Family Protection. At a regional level, Ms. Haj Hassan has worked closely with the Arab League as a member of the regional advisory committee to develop the Arab Strategy for the family. At an international level Ms. Haj Hassan has participated in several UN & international conferences and events. With her endeavor to have an impact at the decision making level that affects families, Ms. Haj Hassan ran for Parliament Elections in Jordan in November 2007. Ms. Haj Hassan has a degree in International Business Administration and Marketing from the American University in Switzerland.

About Shireen Zaman
Shireen Zaman is Senior Program Officer for the Middle East and North Africa at Vital Voices Global Partnership, where she focuses on the development of public-private partnerships, particularly in the Middle East, and other projects in the region. She completed her Masters degree at the School of International Service at American University in Washington, DC in 2006 where she focused on democracy issues and the Middle East. Shireen has worked with the Office of Iraq Political Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and with the international non-profit Women Waging Peace. Shireen has also worked with the Moving Ideas Network, doing collaborative communications and legislative strategy with a network of more than 130 organizations. Most recently she worked with the Transnational Broadcast Studies journal in Cairo, Egypt and attended the Arabic Language Institute at the American University based in Cairo. She holds a B.A. in Human Development from Boston College.

FORTUNE/U.S. State Department Global Women's Mentoring Partnership

Each year, the program kicks off with an orientation program in Washington DC organized by Vital Voices in partnership with the US State Department. While in Washington, international participants convene to discuss the importance of public-private partnerships, learn of American best practices in business and government and engage in interactive leadership and communications training sessions.

Following the orientation program in Washington DC, participants travel to various cities across the United States to embark upon a three week mentoring program with a high level female executive in a FORTUNE 500 company. Throughout the mentorship process, participants shadow a powerful woman leader and take away best practices that they can apply to their professional lives at home.

At the end of their three-week mentorship experience, the international women leaders re-convene in New York City for a closing program to discuss lessons learned and plans for future activities.

Maria Pacheco is the founder and director of Kiej de los Bosques--a private company that was founded in 2004 that works to develop economic opportunities for indigenous Guatemalan women. Ms. Pacheco was selected for the FORTUNE/State Department International Women Leaders Mentoring Partnership last spring and recently received an award from Vital Voices at their 2007 Annual Leadership Awards and Benefit, at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts on March 14, 2007. Ms. Pacheco was also invited to lend her âvital voiceâ? to support emerging women leaders throughout Africa at the Vital Voices Pan-African Leadership Summit for Women and Girls in Cape Town, South Africa, January 13-19, 2007. Ms. Pacheco will be the leader of the Guatemalan delegation.

Mery Alfaro VillageliÃ
Mery Alfaro VillageliÃ is Founder and Secretary of Voces Vitales de PanamÃ. She holds a B.A. in Marketing and Publicity and a Master in Business Administration. She is a co-founder Chairperson of FUNDAMUJER. Ms. Alfaro has participated in the movement against the dictatorship, and was imprisoned and exiled during the Noriega regime. She was elected alternate legislator in 1989. While in the National Assembly, she modified discriminatory provisions of the Civil Code, introduced innovative ideas in the Family Code, and promoted the law against domestic violence.

In rural Guatemala, Maria Pacheco is bringing dreams to life. As General Manager and Owner of Keij de Los Bosques (Protectors of the Forest), she helps indigenous Guatemalan women create small business enterprises and link them to local and international markets. Ms. Pacheco is also National Program Designer for the Economic Development for Rural Communities (SEGEPLAN), a program that provides 300 rural production groups with the technical assistance required for national and international success.

Maria Pacheco is passionate about economic development in rural areas, because sheâs seen first-hand the difference it makes for women, their families, and the future. When a mother can support herself and her children, she earns not only income, but confidence, dignity, and respect. And when rural men and women no longer need to leave the land to survive, they can protect and provide for the health and success of their communities.

About Awut Deng Acuil
Awut Deng Acuil has devoted her life to conflict resolution. Born and raised in South Sudan, she is all too familiar with regional hardship, national conflict, and personal loss â including the death of her husband. Yet throughout, she has met the brutality of war with a relentless commitment to peace.

She says she first became an activist in 1994, as a refugee in Kenya. Her young son asked her how long the civil war in Sudan would last and when they could go home. As she put it, âI could not answer his questions. I had no idea when they could go home. The only way to answer was to take action, to contribute to ending the war, to create peace and to bring hope.â?

She began to travel throughout her country, advocating for peace. An expert trainer on conflict resolution, she helped make the New Sudan Council of Churches one of the most successful conflict mitigation organizations in Sudan. She was instrumental in the people-to-people peace processes that helped bridge tribal divides in the Bahr El Ghazal and Upper Nile regions. She also helped start the Sudanese Women Association in Nairobi and the Sudanese Women Voice for Peace, which mobilized women both inside and outside Sudan on behalf of peace and unity. Throughout, she has persistently championed womenâs participation in charting their countryâs future.

Currently presidential adviser on gender and human rights to the Government of Southern Sudan, Ms. Deng has been recognized internationally for her inspirational leadership.

About Margaret Alva
Trailblazing politician, tireless public servant, and eloquent defender of social justice, Margaret Alva spearheaded a âsilent revolutionâ? that ensured the voices of her countrywomen would be heard. As a member of the Indian parliament from 1974 to 2004, she championed four major legislative amendments to strengthen womenâs rights in her homeland, including the devolution of more power to local government and the reservation of a third of local council seats for women. When the reform was adopted, Ms. Alva made it her mission to inspire Indian women to run for office. As a result of her efforts, today thousands of Indian women are engaged in the political process -- as informed constituents, competitive candidates, and elected representatives.

Studies show that women holding local office are making a difference for the communities they serve â investing in infrastructure, securing safe drinking water and sanitation, stopping violence against women, and supporting education for boys and girls. The message of the silent revolution is clear: Expanding democracy and political participation has benefited not only Indian women but society as a whole.

Margaret Alva now serves as secretary general of the Indian National Congress and is a close adviser to its president, Sonia Gandhi. She was also Minister of Human Resource Development under the government of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, where she led the effort to harness and promote the potential of Indiaâs massive population. Throughout her career, she has used her power to lift the lives of those at the grassroots â enabling womenâs political leadership to take root, and the worldâs largest democracy to flourish.

The Vital Voices Global Partnership, together with African and international partners, will launch a new initiative at the Vital Voices of Africa: A Leadership Summit for Women and Girls in Cape Town, South Africa, January 14-19, 2007. The Summit will bring together women and girls who are emerging and established leaders across countries, sectors and generations to grapple with some of the most pressing challenges facing Africa: economic development, trade, violence against women, HIV/AIDS and good governance. The Summit will recognize the critical role that African women and girls can and must play in moving the continent forward socially, politically and economically. Over the course of the week, participants will strategize and collaborate on ways to meet these challenges. The Summit will highlight successful practices that have worked. From these discussions, it is our aim to develop an action plan and build a strong network of women leaders who will continue to work together to effectively address these issues.

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is currently a Distinguished Fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. She is also MD/CEO of NOI Global, a Financial Advisory and Development Consulting Services Company based in both Nigeria and the United States. Dr. Okonjo- Iweala, served from June to August 2006 as Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Federal Republic of Nigeria. She headed Nigeria's acclaimed Presidential Economic Team, responsible for implementing President Obasanjo's sweeping economic and social reform agenda for Nigeria.

Melanne Verveer has more than 25 years of nonprofit and public service experience. She currently serves as Chair of Vital Voices Global Partnership, an organization that focuses on supporting emerging women leaders globally in the areas of political participation, entrepreneurship and human rights. Ms. Verveer served as Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff to the First Lady in the Clinton Administration. As a member of the White House senior staff, she advised the President and implemented a wide range of substantive policies, budget priorities and communications strategies. She was the First Lady's chief assistant in her extensive international activities, took a lead in establishing the President's Interagency Council on Women and was instrumental in creating the Vital Voices Democracy Initiative.
